What Causes Sprains?
If you have played any sport, then there is a good chance that you have either had a sprain or a strain in your lifetime. The most common sprain is in the ankle, such as a rolled ankle, and the most common strain is in the hamstring, such as pulling a hamstring. A sprain is defined as the stretching or tearing of ligaments, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ligaments are the fibrous bands that connect bone to bone. These generally take longer to heal because of the lack of blood flow that ligaments have.
What Causes Strains?
A strain is defined as an injury to a muscle or tendon, according to the Mayo Clinic. Tendons are what attach the muscle to the bone. When a muscle is stretched past its limits and is asked to activate, a muscle strain is usually a result. This is often seen in the low back causing low back pain or in the hamstrings.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help Sprains or Strains?
Chiropractic care is helpful when dealing with sprains or strains. Most sprains and strains will get better on their own by practicing the PRICE Method- Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. However, the newest update in the research shows that the MEAT method (Movement, Exercise, Analgesics, and Treatment) is much more effective! By adding chiropractic care, we can often see recovery time decrease, getting you back into your daily routines faster!
What To Expect For Treatment?
-
Chiropractic adjustments when warranted
-
Manual Muscle Therapy to decrease surrounding muscle tightness
-
Corrective exercises once pain has decreased to help build strength to prevent re-injury.
